WELCOME TO INVESTIGATIVE STRATEGIES

Each weekly lesson is formatted into 3 Web pages. You are currently viewing page 1 of week 1. Page 1 of each week will always begin with an outline of the 3 web pages such as the outline that follows. Please notice the 3 web pages for each week are organized into (a) an introduction to the week's tasks, (b) the content for that week, and (c) a checklist of what should be completed for the week and an overview of what is coming next week. Become familiar with this format. Use the links at the bottom of each page to navigate to each page.

A Message from the
Head Librarian

Welcome to Investigative Strategies!

The most efficient way to contact me is through email Lbarry@uwf.edu . If you need to come to face to face office hours PLEASE make an appointment first! There are many occasions in which I am pulled away from my office so I can not guarantee that I will be there unless you make an appointment with me first.

Two areas of advice to be successful in this course:

1) Read everything for each weekly lesson including the links provided. This is the only way I have to communicate to you what I would have said in a class lecture. As you read the content, you will come across new vocabulary. If you are not sure what a word means, use your text books as a reference. Look up the words and read the passages about it in your text book. You need to be self-motivated in order to do well. You must read the information or you cannot expect to learn anything.

Some of the tasks that you will be assigned require that you self-check your work rather than submit your work for grading.  Do not ignore these assignments.  Complete all assigned tasks. Much of the work you will do in this class is "self check". It's for your benefit to learn and practice new concepts that you will be tested on and will be asked to apply later. These are assignments that I think will help you understand the concepts and you can check them against the model responses provided to make sure you are on the right track. If your answers differ, then that should be an indication to you to go back and re-visit the lesson and or search the textbook to understand the differences.

2) Make sure you complete your work on time. Do not fall behind in this class. When I ask you to begin looking up articles, I mean for you to start right then. Do not wait or you will not be able to complete the class.

I will not give an incomplete to anyone who hasn't completed at least 70% of the course with a satisfactory grade. This is the university's rule and I stick by it, so do not let yourself fall behind!

Welcome to the class.

Dr. Barry

Some tasks that need to be completed before you proceed to page 2 of this week's lesson:

Task #1:
You will need to have Adobe Reader installed on your computer to be able to access some of the files provided in the course.
Many of you may already have this program installed.  Check before you take the time to download and install it.  If you need to download the program, use one of the following two methods.

  • Download and install the program from SoftServ:
    1. Log-in to Argus: http://argus.uwf.edu
    2. Click the IT Help tab.
    3. Scroll down to the IT Self Service channel.
    4. Click the Free Software Downloads link.
    5. Select and install Adobe Acrobat Reader.
    6. Follow the instructions on the website for installing the program.

If you have any difficulties email the ITS helpdesk@uwf.edu

Task #2:

It is important that you activate your UWF email account and  understand what your username and password are.  It will be necessary for you to use your username and password during various parts of the course.  Therefore, please figure it out now!  It is important that I am always able to get in touch with you when necessary. In most cases I will do this by email through the nautical system. You must check your UWF email account on a regular, frequent basis or you will miss important information needed for the course.  If you need assistance setting up or accessing your account, please refer to Argus (http://argus.uwf.edu).

Task #3:

One of the resources that you will use in this course is the UWF library.  Access to some of the library resources requires a nautilus card number or library access number.  If you do not have a UWF nautilus card or library access number, contact the circulation department at the UWF library.  Refer to the library website for more information: http://library.uwf.edu/Services/AccessOffCampus/OffCampus.htm.
