One: Need to assess student understanding of a recently introduced concept.
- Give teacher-made quiz.
- Use oral questioning and keep notes of who is answering questions.
- Give students a cooperative learning activity involving the new concept and observe each student’s input.
Two: Determine if students can re-tell/re-teach the steps in solving a math problem.
- Have students write a paragraph or make a flow map explaining the steps in solving the math problem.
- Have a student orally explain the steps to another student, while teacher observes and takes notes.
- After each student has solved the math problem, have him or her explain to the teacher (one-on-one) what he or she did to solve the problem.
Three: Determine if students have comprehended a story read aloud by the teacher.
- Ask questions about the story as teacher reads aloud.
- After reading the story, give students a comprehension test about the story.
- After reading the story, have students write a book report that tells the characters, setting, main idea, and a summary of the story.
